How about an interview series?

From the Educational Futures website, there are quite a few academics at OU interested in "things like this". Named persons: Simon Buckingham Shum, Teresa Cremin, Mark Fenton O'Creevy, Rebecca Ferguson, Regine Hampel, Agnes Kukulska-Hulme, Karen Littleton, Liz Marr, Patrick McAndrew, David Messer, Marian Petre, John Rose-Adams, Daniel Weinbren. (Probably more would be interested.)

Can we come up with an interview protocol and start interviewing these people? What are the questions we'd want to ask? Arided 19:57, 2 October 2012 (BST)

Mair 20:02, 25 October 2012 (BST) : I had some ideas for the Virtual School interview
I would suggest interviewing a sample of staff, students and parents from Florida Virtual School or a similar US school (via skype to save travel expenses!)

I would ask:

  • How long have you been attending / teaching at the school? (for parents, all questions would refer to child)
  • What subjects do you study / teach?
  • Are you studying / teaching for exams and if so which ones?
  • What do you see as the benefits of studying/teaching at a virtual school?
  • What do you see as the difficulties of studying/teaching at a virtual school?
  • If you have overcome any of these difficulties, how did you do it?
  • What do you see as the essential ingredients of successful virtual teaching and learning (ask all respondents this question about both teaching and learning).
  • What ideas for improvement or innovation do you have?
  • Would you prefer to study / teach at a 'face-to-face' school or a virtual one?
  • Does your answer to the previous question depend on subject or circumstances or would you always prefer one particular type?
  • Would you recommend studying / teaching at an online school to a friend? Why? Why not?

I would also ask the school administrative section whether they have statistics for exam success and student satisfaction for their students, and if possible make comparison with national/regional stats.

What about starting by asking them to describe a typical day/week in the life of a virtual school teacher and/or student? For many of us having a picture of what a virtual school is like would be helpful. How does it integrate with physical school? Is it synchronous or asynchronous or a mixture?
