Technology Across the Curriculum

When thinking about the use of digital technology across the curriculum there are two different facets to this:

  • Embedded technology - the use of digital technology within a subject which changes the nature of that discipline. In other words, embedded technology deals with how digital technology changes the nature of the subject and thus the curriculum. For more detail, see Embedded Technology/Overview.
  • Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) - the use of digital technology to enhance pedagogy (how we teach). In other words, TEL is concerned with how digital technology can change/extend the ways in which learning is supported (teaching/pedagogy). For example, video-conferencing technology can facilitate conversation with distant native speakers for modern language learners.

Summary: In the last five years UK schools have spent more than £1 billion on digital technology. From interactive whiteboards to tablets, there is more digital technology in schools than ever before. But so far there has been little evidence of substantial success in improving educational outcomes. Something is going wrong. Nesta commissioned the London Knowledge Lab (LKL) and Learning Sciences Research Institute (LSRI), University of Nottingham, to analyse how technology has been used in the UK education systems and lessons from around the world. Uniquely, we wanted this to be set within a clear framework for better understanding the impact on learning experiences. Decoding Learning finds proof of technology supporting effective learning, emerging technologies that show promise of impact, and exciting teacher practice that displays the potential for effective digital education.

First we'll talk about "the curriculum", and then look at how ICT can be relevant within or adjacent to the topics here.

  • We'll take a look at the current state of affairs, in particular, looking at the STEM curriculum and graduation rates, where we've been gathering some statistics information
  • Relevant "interventions" might include things like ETextbooks, but more interactive formats are probably even more relevant! (For example, learning in online communities, interactive experiments, robotics and simulations, etc.)
  • In addition to looking at topics and resources for students, we'll also look at topics and resources for teachers (and parents).
