Hmm ... I just noticed that if I read a thread by going to it directly (eg by clicking on the talk tab for that page) then that doesn't register the threadas having been read - and the unread counter in the top bar remains unchanged. If I want to change the unread counter then I have to click on it and use that route into the threads AND I have to click on the Mark as Read link for each of the threads.
