The one-line definition from Wikipedia is: "A profession is a vocation founded upon specialized educational training, the purpose of which is to supply objective counsel and service to others, for a direct and definite compensation, wholly apart from expectation of other business gain." - Most professions have a professional body, expectations about keeping up to date, often re-credentialing every x years, a knowledge base that they are seen as owning (being experts in), no set hours very often. If you can think of anything I have forgotten then add it to the list ...
